LONGDING THE UNEXPLORED NATURE
Londing most recently created district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Natural beauty of this area is multiplied many folds by its vibrant people and culture. Longding is historically inhabited by the wancho people, who practice Gun making, wood carving, and bead making.
This valley forms a part of Patkai ranges. This area is covered with evergreen forests. The area has motor-able roads up to Pongchao in the Longding district.
WANCHO TRIBES
The Wancho are Naga indigenous people inhabiting the Patkai hills of Longding district in the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh. Culturally Naga, they are ethnically related to the Nocte of Arunachal Pradesh and Konyak of Nagaland. The Wancho language belongs to the Tibeto-Burman family under Northern Naga languages.
CULTURE
Tattooing plays a major role in the Wancho tribe. According to tradition, a man is tattooed on his four limbs and his entire face, with the exception of certain regions around the eyes and the lips. The women adorn themselves with necklaces and bangles, along with some light tattooing as well.
The prime festival of the Wancho is Oriah, a festival between March to April, for a period of six to twelve days interspersed with prayer, songs, and dances. Villagers exchange bamboo tubes filled with rice beer as a mark of greeting and goodwill. Pork skin is then offered to the village chief as a mark of respect. This festival continues for several days as jhum paddies are sown, pigs, buffaloes, and gayals are sacrificed, and feasts are arranged in each and every murung (dormitory). Boys and girls, wearing ceremonial costumes, sing, and dance during Oriah. People dances around a "Jangban", a long ceremonial pole planted during Oriah.
LIFESTYLE
The Wancho are traditionally governed by a council of elderly chieftains, known as Wangham or Wangsa.
Like most neighboring tribes, the Wancho constructed houses made out of wood and bamboo, and roofs were thatched with dry leaves. Dormitories, known as Murung, where the boys are trained to be men by their fathers. Although the girls do not have dormitories like the boys, they sleep in one big, single house, with the care of an old lady.
Until 1991, human headhunting was practiced among the Naga tribes, and both the government and missionaries have taken steps to ban the practice of headhunting, which is now restricted to animals.
PLACE OF INTEREST
Bordering Myanmar in the East, this is the most recently created district of Arunachal Pradesh. The Natural beauty of this area is multiplied many folds by its vibrant people and their culture. Oriah is the main festival of the Wancho tribe of Tirap district, celebrated during March-April every year just after snowing paddy in the jhoom plots.

By Train
The nearest rail station from Longding via Kanubari is Sapeghati in Assam situated at a distance of around 60 km from Longding district headquarters.
By Bus
Tata Sumo service is available to Longding from the Town of Tinsukia and Dibrugarh in Assam. Sumo Service is also available from the nearest Town Khonsa. Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, and Khonsa are well connected by bus service from Itanagar and Guwahati.
By Air
The nearest airport is located at Mohanbari near Dibrugarh which is located at a distance of 178 km away from Longding District Headquarters. Besides, the following Helipads are available which can be used during any emergency situation.
