Top 5 places to visit North Sikkim

North Sikkim

Perhaps the most beautiful of the districts, the North offers an exquisite experience for the lover of Nature and alpine scenery. Yumthang alone is enough to satiate the most demanding, with its panoramic Valley of Flowers. During springtime, the lush meadows abound with delicate wildflowers that carpet the valley floor in a rich riot of colors. A must-see here is the Hot Springs and the vibrant Sikkimese tribal culture and customs. 67 km from Gangtok is the Mangan District Headquarter of North District. A three-day music festival is held at Mangan in December every year.

Yumthang Valley, Lachung

Yumthang Valley or Sikkim Valley of Flowers sanctuary, is a nature sanctuary with a river, hot springs, yaks, and grazing pasture on rolling meadows surrounded by the Himalayan mountains in the North Sikkim district of Sikkim state in India. It is at an elevation of 3,564 meters (11,693 ft) above MSL at a distance of 150 kilometers (93 mi) from the state capital Gangtok.

Chopta Valley, Lachen

The valley is frozen during the winter and provides an opportunity to walk over the frozen rivers. The riot of colors during spring belies this aspect, though. An adventurous trek through Chopta valley leads to Muguthang valley at an altitude of 15500ft, another unseen destination in the greater Himalayas.

Gurudongmar Lake, Lachen

The high altitude lake is located about 5 KM south of the Tibetan border, in the district of North Sikkim. The lake can be reached by road from Lachen via Thangu. The road from Thangu to Gurudongmar passes through rugged terrain with moraine, which has high alpine pastures covered with many rhododendron trees. While Indian tourists are allowed to visit the lake, foreigners need to get a special permit from the Ministry of Home Affairs in Delhi.

Phodong Monastery

Phodong belonging to the Karma Kagyu sect of Tibetan Buddhism was built in the early 18th century. The Monastery is one of the six most important Buddhist monasteries in Sikkim and also three important monasteries of the Kagyu sect in Sikkim. The monastery is ordained with beautiful paintings and has a rich collection of ancient murals. It lies at an altitude of 4500 ft overlooking the valleys deep down below and offers a picturesque view of the mountains.

Lachen

Lachen valley has almost everything a traveler could wish for: a land of fairs and festivals, snow-clad mountains, lakes, a valley of flora, fauna, and vibrant local culture. Visits to the Lachen monastery and the women's handicraft center to view the weaving of traditional blankets and carpets will provide insights into the local way of life or perhaps a stunning mountain drive can be taken along the Tibetan plateau to Gurudongmar and Cho Lhamu as a day tour from Lachen. The sacred Gurudongmar Lake at a height of 17,100 ft encircled by snowy massifs is something one would not dare to miss on a visit to Sikkim. One can also stay overnight at Thangu which is 30 km away from Lachen. During summer and monsoon, the entire place is dotted with flowers of all kinds.

Lachung

Lachung has emerged as a popular destination because of its proximity to Yumthang; it is located at a distance of 25 km from Yumthang. The Lachung village has a local self-governing body called the ‘Dzumsa’ and the villagers have retained their unique cultural identity over the years in this region. The area of the village is stretched on either side of Lachung and the Lachung Monastery is the prominent place for all religious and cultural activities.
