Loktak Lake is located in Manipur Northeast India, it falls under Bishnupur District is 48km from Imphal City. here you will find Houses floating in the lake. Loktak Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Northeast India. The houses are made on a surface called Phumdi. Phumdi is only found here throw worldwide. Phumdi are the floating soil block which is around 240sq km floating in this lake, the blocks are made of grass, weeds, soil layer by layer its specialty is that it does not sink in water, the 20% of Phumdi is up water and 80% is inside the water and it is so strong that 1000 of Meitei community people have built there houses in Phumdis. this Phumdi always keeps on floating, so if you are on the north side of the lake at night in the morning you will find yourself on the south side of the lake. it's a great experience itself that every morning you wake with a new lakeside. The main source of income of Meitei community is fishing. they have build circle phumdi which are used to catch fish.


Keibul Lamjao National Park




The National Park Covering an area of around 40 square kilometers, Keibul Lamjao is entitled as the “World’s Only Floating National Park”. It looks intoxicating and like a realm of waterways and floating meadows, referred to as phumdi by the locals. This floating National Park has its own unique ecosystem, where Indian Python, Barking Deer rare species are found, the main specialty is Sagai Deer. Sagai Deer is a species that only found in this National Park. With the support of villagers and the initiative of the forest department, it has become the perfect home for Sagai Deer at Keibul Lamjao, Nearly 24,000 tourists visit Loktak Lake each year.


Manmade Phumdi


Meitei community people mostly depend on fishing for their income, so they have built this circle phumdi which are used to catch fish.

By road: Loktak Lake is situated about 48 km away from Imphal. To reach Loktak, you must first take a taxi or a cab from Imphal

By Airport: Tulihal International Airport Imphal, 27 Kms from District Hq 

By Train: Jiribam Railway Station Jiribam Manipur, 240 Kms from District Hq
